Asbestos was widely used in many industries in the UK for over 50 years and its use only controlled in the early 1990s. As a result there are many people who were exposed to asbestos dust whilst at work and who are now being told they have an asbestos related illness.

If you have been affected by an asbestos related disease we do understand how upset you will be and concerned about the future too, but we can help you to be clear about your legal position and decide what your next steps will be.

How much can you claim?

Asbestosis is a disease which is caused only by exposure to asbestos over a long period of time. In order to have asbestosis, you will have inhaled asbestos fibres sometime in the past. When you inhale these, your lungs will try to break them down, but can’t because they are too big. The result is permanent damage to your alveoli. The growth has the result of reducing the amount of space in the lungs and although they can still expand, there is less space into which air can be inhaled. This condition can vary in severity.

There will normally be a number of symptoms which will develop. They are:

  • Breathlessness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough

The biggest problem with diseases associated with asbestos are that the symptoms do not normally start until 15 to 30 years after your exposure, so it may not be immediately obvious that it is asbestos exposure that is to blame.

Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to reverse the damage that asbestos has caused to your lungs. Your condition may not get any worse, but in some circumstances it can.

After you have been diagnosed with asbestosis, your life will change. You will be living with a condition that won’t ever go away and has every possibility of getting worse. You may need specialist care, or adaptations to your house to make managing your condition easier and a claim for compensation will help you to be able to do this without a financial struggle.

You are entitled to be compensated because your employer has failed to protect you and as a result, you now have a condition which is not treatable.

Depending on how the disease affects your life you may receive anywhere between £31,000 to £68,000 in compensation, which will help you and your loved ones to come to terms with your diagnosis.
